The American Samoa Community College, a U.S. Land Grant institution, invites applications for a full-time Plant Pathologist. The position is a two-year contract, renewable upon satisfactory performance, and housed within the College’s Division of Agriculture, Community and Natural Resources (https://acnr.amsamoa.edu/). Responsibilities include both research and extension, as well as support for the College’s instructional programs.
Responsibilities:
- Plan, develop, implement, and evaluate the plant pathology research program based on local needs and grantor requirements
 - Train and supervise research assistants and technicians in support of research and extension projects
 - Work closely with counterparts to design and conduct research and extension projects addressing local community plant disease management needs
 - Provide technical support and collaboration on agriculture and forestry programs
 - Provide technical support for instructional programs
 - Conduct and assist with workshops, seminars and other outreach activities to share research findings and promote improved plant disease management in American Samoa
 - Provide plant disease diagnostic services to the community
 - Publish research findings in local technical reports as well as refereed journals
 
Minimum qualifications
- Master’s degree in plant pathology
 - Three years of research and/or extension experience
 - Professional knowledge in plant pathology, agriculture, forestry
 - Proven research competence
 - Excellent interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills.
 - Strength and stamina to conduct field work in the humid tropics
 - Expertise in diagnostics and management of plant diseases
 - Ability to work closely with extension agents and farmers to solve locally significant plant disease problems
 
Preferred qualifications
- Ph.D. in plant pathology
 - Strong background in fungal and oomycete biology
